The "Vine" Tree

The tree given between the lines below appears to have been written by a Mr W. E. Hingston in 1903. He seems to have lived in or near Buffalo in New York State, U.S.A. (see entries under 701 and 809 below). The information given here is only part of a larger study, which seems to have been lost.

The present version is taken from a typescript copy prepared by Miss Lavinia Jane Hingston (831), Aunt Vine (hence the name of the tree) to Jane Sweet of Ontario, who passed a copy to me and with whose permission this copy has been placed on the Internet. Lavinia, who was a stenographer, appears to have typed up foolscap pages that included her own family in 1907 - those pages were numbered 1-22.

Individuals within the tree are numbered. Details are given only of numbers 701-843, 865 & 920, but reference is made to many other individuals, and also cross-references to other notes about them, from which it appears certain that this is part of a larger work. It would appear that the numbering system reserved 1-1999 for Hingstons, 2000-2999 for Hingston spouses, and 3000 upwards for others.

Associated with these papers is what appears to be a printer's sample (40k .gif file) of the tabular form in which the data was to be presented, and some jottings which show that the table would have had 3500 lines, of which 2800 would be filled (presumably one person per line), together with 400 pages of associated text. 200 copies were envisaged. It is assumed that the sample was drawn up to get an estimate of the costs but that the printing did not go ahead.

The entries given here fall into five distinct lines plus a few fragments.

There seems to be an assumption in what is written that all the lines can be traced back to a family at Holbeton in South Devon. This family is fairly well known and has been documented elsewhere, both in the tree presented by Allen & Dymond and in tree HD on this web site. However, the details of the links between the trees are conjectural - see the comments under 748, 755 and 776.

No details are given as to sources. The details of individuals in the 19th Century seem reasonably secure - dates are given and some details of family life - it would seem likely that the author corresponded with at least some of the individuals concerned. However, the earlier entries are not so certain - some dates are given, which presumably came from parish records or possibly family bibles, but there are other aspects which make one doubtful. In particular, the naming of Devon villages is wrong, which perhaps implies that the information was from half-remembered family tales rather than primary sources.

We do know that there were Hingstons in Ireland - at least one Hingston was given land in the Cromwellian settlements in 1649 which could be the source of the Irish Hingstons. In the sample table reference is made to Inchichore (which I believe is a suburb of Dublin today), Whitehall (which I have not yet tracked down) and in the main text reference is also made to Cloyne, which is a few miles from Cork.

In Devon, reference is made to several places where we know there were Hingston families, but some of the names are wrong (Deptford is probably Diptford, Earlington is probably East Allington, Great Brent is probably South Brent, etc.). Perhaps the biggest problem lies in identifying Mageressay, which has no obvious Devon equivalent, but it may represent Mevagissy in Cornwall. It is known that there were Hingstons on Cornwall, and also that some were involved in the Excise Service, which might well have taken them to various coastal communities.

701. Samuel James Hingston

Youngest son of James 206 and Catherine 2024; born at Cloyne, Ireland 1775. Married Miss Winifred Cavindish 2100 of County Cavin, Ireland, 1797 and had by her three children - Sarah 702, Thomas 703 and Samuel 704. Colonel, then Lieut. and Adjutant, Hingston came to Canada with the 100th (?) Regiment, which, at the close of the war became the 99th (?). He was in command of the infantry in Port Erie, Canada, when they bombarded the then village of Buffalo and Fort on the 17th March 1813. Some of the shells fell short, and, falling in the Niagara River, two of them, a six and a ten inch, were dug up by Hingston and Wood's dredge, then in charge of W.E. Hingston, the compiler of these notes, on the 22nd of June, 1889, 76 years afterwards, and are now in his possession.

Lieut. Hingston distinguished himself and earned his promotion at the Battle of Chippawa, near Niagara Falls, where he was wounded in the forehead and in the groin, 5 July, 1814. The British loss that day was 138 killed and 365 wounded. When the regiment was disbanded some time afterwards, he chose a very pretty place near Huntingdon, on the Chateauguay river. There he organized the Militia Force, Lord Dalhousie giving him command of the County of Huntingdon, and subsequently Sir James Kempt gave him Colonelcy of the whole County of Beauhamoes (Beauharnois?). He continued, to the end of his life, in 1830, to be lame from the wound he received at Chippawa.

The Colonel's wife having been dead some time, he married again, this time Miss Eleanor McGrath, 2101, of Montreal, in October, 1821, who died in 1866, having survived him 35 years. By the second wife he had two daughters - Eleanor 705 and Margaret 706, and two sons - William Hales 707 and Samuel James 708, the latter born six months after his father's death.

702 Sarah Hingston

Eldest child of Samuel 701 and Winnifred 2100; born in Cloyne, Ireland, 1799. Was married to John Davidson 2152 of Montreal, and died in 1885, having had two children - John 3137 and Ellen 3138.

703 Thomas Hingston

Eldest son of Samuel 701 and Winnifred 2100; born Cloyne, Ireland, 1801. Was married in Canada, 14 August 1843, to Matilda Picard 2171. She died 10 March 1881, leaving a large family - Samuel 709, William 710, Matilda 712, Thomas 713, Sarah 715, Annie 716, Joseph 717, and James 719, and had buried three (Mary 711, John 714, Ellen 718). Mr Hingston, who was a farmer, died at his home in Athelstan, 2 March 1883.

704 Samuel James Hingston

Died young. I do not know whether he was born or died in Ireland or Canada. He was the youngest child of Samuel 701 and Winnifred 2100.

705 Eleanor Hingston

The eldest child of Samuel 701 by his second wife Eleanor 2101. Born at Hinchenbrooke, 30 June 1825. Married Richard P Smith 2102 of Montreal, and by him had seven children - James Hingston 3125, Richard W.H. 3126, Dolly 3127, Fannie 3126, Delia 3129, Edward H. 3130, and Maggie 3131. Mrs Eleanor Hingston Smith died 12 May 1892.

706 Margaret Hingston

Second child of Samuel 701 and Eleanor 2101, born at Hinchenbrook, 9 April 1827. Was married to John Davidson 2103, 6 September 1846. Mrs Davidson succeeded her father in command of the Militia at her father's death in 1831 (see notes on J.D. 2103). They had a large family - Frederick 3139, Ellen 3140, William 3141, James 3142, John 3143, Edward 3144, Fannie 3145, Lizzie 3146, Charlotte 3147, and Florence 3146. The mother, Margaret H. Davidson, and all but one child survived the father, who died 23 January 1899.

707 William Hales Hingston

M.D., of Montreal, eldest son of Samuel 701 and Eleanor 2102. Born at Huntingdon, Canada, 29 June 1829. His father died some 18 months afterwards. He is widely known as W.H. Hingston, M.D., L.R.C.S.E., D.C., LL.D. etc., the most popular and able surgeon in Canada. He was invited by the American Consul General to go to Washington to assist in consultation with President Garfield's physicians, but he replied that he concurred in the opinion of Drs. Hamilton and Agnew; that there was already a sufficient number of able surgeons attending the wounded President, and that any further meddling might be disastrous.

Dr Hingston was twice mayor of Montreal, 1875 and 1876. "The Illustrated Paper of Montreal" of 7 April 1875, has a good likeness of him engrossed from a photo, also a brief sketch of his life, from which I quote the following:

"He was sent to a small grammar school in the neighbourhood, kept by a Rev. Mr. Williams, a Church of England clergyman, and afterwards by Mr. (now Sir) John Rose, and subsequently Mr. Anderson. During Mr. Rose's time he obtained the first prize in the Junior class, and during Mr. Anderson's incumbency, the prize among the seniors. Then at 13 he was sent to the Montreal College, where, at the end of the first year he obtained the prize in every branch, carrying three firsts and two seconds, while his chief opponent, the present Superior of the College, obtained the remaining two first and three second. The Rev. Mr. Villineure, one of the masters, often spoke of him as having been at that time full of fun and merriment, "un grand farceur" as he was then termed, and doing anything to create merriment or avoid a quarrel, but when a quarrel was forced upon him, never shrinking from the issue, no matter how uncertain it might appear. He afterwards spent a couple of years in studying pharmacy with R.W. Rexford, when he entered upon the study of medicine at McGill University. He graduated at the end of four years, and immediately left for England. He obtained the Surgeon's diploma of the University of Edinburgh. By the most rigid economy he succeeded in visiting England, Ireland and Scotland, and almost every country in Europe, spending the greater part of his time in hospitals, and bringing back with him diplomas from Scotland, France, Prussia, Austria and Bavaria, one, the membership of the Leopold Academy, purely honory and given only to authors, was the first ever obtained by a Canadian, Sir William Logan and T. Slerry Hunt being the next recipients of the honor. Much of his journeys in Europe were made on foot, an exercise in which he still excels, his travelling companion for the time being young Alexander (now Lord) Shand of Edinburgh and Mr P. Honeymeade of Glasgow. His utter abnigation of self and untiring zeal and benevolence during the cholera season of 1854 has built for him an extensive practice, besides a host of friends.

Soon after beginning practice, Mr. Hingston received unsolicited the appointment of Surgeon to the English speaking departments of the Hotel Dieu Hospital. Many of the more difficult and hazardous operations in surgery have been thus introduced by him to the profession in Canada, such as, for instance, excision of the knee joint, removal of the uterus and congenitalia, and acquired deformities, the successful removal of the tongue and lower jaw at the same time, etc. While visiting Europe in 1867 one of his masters, Professor (now Sir) James Simpson, paid a high tribute to Canadian surgeons in the person of Dr. Hingston, by inviting him to perform a surgical operation of difficulty on one of his (Sir James') patients; and on speaking of him a few weeks afterwards in a British medical journal of the time Sir James styles him 'that distinguished American surgeon lately amongst us'. He received the degree of D.C.L. from the University of Lennoxville (Bishop's University) in 1871, and in 1874 he was unanimously elected Governor of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Lower Canada."

He was elected mayor of Montreal in 1875 by a very large majority. The same paper quoted above, speaking of it, adds: "The boldness and frankness of the new Mayor's inaugural address was of a character to call forth enconiums from the press generally, the Witness speaking of it as equalling Gladstone's efforts in clothing the dryest material in poetic language."

In surgery, Dr. Hingston has probably done as much work as any surgeon in America. When in Europe in 1866 (1886) this fact was recognized by the British Medical Association when electing him an honory member, the President of the Council, Sir Walter Foster, saying, "He is too well known to the members of this Association to require I should say anything regarding him. Dr. Hingston's reputation as a surgeon is not confined to Canada."

In July, 1892, Dr. Hingston went to England at the invitation of the British Medical Association to deliver the inaugural address on surgery before that great body. This is the first time Canada, or indeed America, has been so honored.

Dr. Hingston married, 16 September 1875, Margaret Josephine 2104, daughter of the Honorable D.A. McDonald, Lieut. Governor of Ontario. The ceremony took place in St. Michael's Church, Toronto, and the reception was held in the Government House.

On the Queen's birthday, 1895, Dr. Hingston was created a Knight Batchellor (Bachelor) at the same time as Lewis Morris, the poet, Dr. W. Russell, the war correspondent, Henry Irving, the actor, and Walter Besant, the author.

Sir William and Lady Hingston have issue - William 720, Donald 721, Aileen 722, Reginald 723, and Edmund 724, His residence is on the corner of Sherbrooke and Metcalf Sts., Montreal, Canada.

708 Samuel James Hingston

Posthumous child of Samuel 701 and his wife Eleanor 2102. Born at Hinchenbrooke, 28 June 1831, his father having died December, 1830. He married, 27 November 1856, Rebecca Cecilia Turney 2105, of Montreal. (see note) Mr. Hingston followed a drygoods or clothing business all his life, and has crossed the Atlantic 27 times to purchase stock, and was for many years senior partner in the firm of Hingston, Coy and Peake, Clothiers, Kansas City, Mo. Mrs Hingston died in 1899. Mr. Hingston and their son, James 725, survive her.

709 Samuel Hingston

Eldest son of Thomas 703 and Matilda 2171. Born at Athelstain, 27 March 1844. Married 22 September 1877, to Catherine Clary, of the same place. They have four children - Matilda 734, Mara 735, Clara 736, and one other, 737, born May 11, 1907.

710 William Hingston

Second child of Thomas 703 and Matilda 2171. Born at Athelstain, 17 June 1845, and married 15 January 1885, Miss Elizabeth Gilmore of the same place. As far as I know they have no family.

711 Mary Hingston

Third child of Thomas 703 and Matilda 2171. Born at Athelstain, 6 November 1847. Married, 8 May 1866, to John La Fountain. She died 10 June 1875, leaving three children - Mary 3190, John 3191, and Ellen 3192.

712 Matilda Hingston

Fourth child of Thomas 703 and Matilda 2171. Born at Athelstain, 24 May 1849. Married Robert Gibson 2175, 23 November 1873, and has nine children - Margaret 3156, Mary 3157, William 3158, Annie 3139, Janet 3160, Thomas 3161, Robert 3162, John 3163, and Sarah 3164.

713 Thomas Cavindish Hingston

Fifth child of Thomas 703 and Matilda 2171. Born at Athelstain, 12 April 1852. Married, 9 April 1877, to Miss Margaret Monroe 2172. She died in 1866 (?), and left him five children - John 726, Mary 727, Thomas 728, Arabella 729, and Archibald 730. Mr Hingston married secondly Miss Ellen Monroe in 1887, and had by her three children - Flossie 731, William 732, and Margaret 733.

Mr. Hingston and one of his sons are engaged in the hardware and house furnishing business at Ormestown, Canada, and seem to be prospering.

714 John Hingston

Sixth child of Thomas 703 and Matilda 2171. Born at Athelstain, 2 February 1853, and died March 2, 1875.

715 Sarah Hingston

Seventh child of Thomas 703 and Matilda 2171. Born at Athelstain, 11 July 1855. Married 14 March 1881, to Robert Murphy 2177. No children reported to me.

Eighth child of Thomas 703 and Matilda 2171. Born at Athelstain, 1 February 1857. Married 11 November 1895, to Charles McCarthy 2688 of Athelstain. She died, without issue, 6 November 1896.

Mr. Hingston was at one time a partner in the firm of Schuster, Hingston & Co., of St. Joseph, Mo. and head of the firm of Hingston and Co., Little Rock, Arkansas. He is now engaged in the music business in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Hingston is much sought after, he having a very fine tenor voice, and has composed a large number of pieces of music.

743 Henry Thomas Hingston

Son of Henry 742 and Mary 2393. Born on the Isle of Jersey, 1852. Came to Canada, settled in Toronto, where he married Miss Georgina Mary Gilmour 2405, 5 September 1877. They had two children - Elizabeth 746, who died one day old, and William 747, born 27 June 1882. Mr Hingston dropped dead in his chair at 6:20 P.M., while at his dinner, 27 March 1883.

Of Kingston and Wonwell. He and his brother William, of whom I have no further record only that they are the fathers of 751, 752, and (this first 'and' has been added above and between 752 and 750) 750, 753, and 754, and are married to 2613 and 2614 (see below). They form the link that binds the Hingston families of Holbesen (sic - Holbeton?), Brent and Whitehall together, but I can not get the date of their births at present. Mr. Hingston 748, married a Miss Gilliam _______ 2613 (a rather peculiar Christian name for a woman), and by her had one daughter, Margaret 751, and one son, Thomas 752.

749 William Hingston

Brother to the above. Married Elizabeth ________ 2614, and had by her three sons - John 750, Edward 1159 (?) of Modbury, and William 753, and one daughter - Margaret 754. It was during the life of this and next generation that the family scattered around to Modbury, Ringmore, Arerton-Gifford (sic - Aveton Gifford?), Kingsbridge, West-Alvington, Thurleston and Brent.

750 John Hingston

Son of William 749 and Elizabeth 2614. Born at Wonwell, and christened at Kingston Church. Married Miss Margaret Heath 2611 of Stotenham (sic - Stokenham?), 29 September 1653, and had two children, Peter 755 and Warwick 756.

Daughter of Edward 748 and Gilliam 2613. Died young, 7 March 1634.

Of Halwell, together with William of Blackhawton (sic - Blackawton?) 777, Philip of Woodleigh 778, and John of Morley 780, are the progenitors of the Hingstons in and around Brent, Stave (sic - does he mean Staverton?), Morley, Blackhawton, etc. During the time of this generation to which they belong, there was quite a break-up in the Hingston family, and whether these are brothers or cousins it is hard to say, for many of the same names settled in the south east. Of Morleigh, third son of Philip 778 and Mary 2489. Born 1 July 1734. Married, 25 October 1761, to Miss Sarah White 2493, of Woodleigh. They had issue - Richard of Great Bent (Brent) 800, John of Great Bent (Brent) 801, William F. of Plymouth 802, Peter White of Plymouth 803, Edward of Mageressay (sic - I have no idea where this is - could it be Mevagissy in Cornwall? There is no name remotely like this that I know of in Devon.) 804, Arthur 805, Philip 806, and Eliza 807, Dorothy 927, Sarah 928, Mary Ann 929, and John 930. Mr. Hingston died 2 September 1780. His widow survived him 22 years.

Second daughter of Philip 778 and Mary 2489. I have no record of her only that she was buried at Morley, 15 January 1806.

801 John Hingston

Of Great Brent, second child of Richard 785 and Sarah 2493. Born 5 November 1764. Married Miss Frances ________ 2160. Mr. Hingston never had any issue, but adopted John 890, his grand-nephew, to whom he left the most of his large fortune. He died 9 July 1854, and is buried on the south side of the church yard, South Brent, with his wife and grand-nephew.

802 William Follett Hingston

Third son of Richard 785 and Sarah 2493. Was born 28 July 1773. Was an old bachelor, and died without issue.

803 Peter White Hingston

Fourth son of Richard 785 and Sarah 2493. Was born 5 November 1779, and moved to Plymouth, or was born there, I don't know which. He married Miss Grace Cutmore 2288, of Horsebrook (sic). By her he had three sons and four daughters - Grace 872, William 873, Dorothy 874, Peter 875, Susan 876, John 903, and Sarah 1258 (?). Mr. Hingston died at Plymouth, 18 February 1861. Was a farmer by profession.

804 Edward Hingston

Of Mageressay, fifth son of Richard 785 and Sarah 2493. Was born 3 July 1778, and married Charlotte Mould 2107, of Plymouth. By her he had issue - James 808, Edward 904, Mary 905, Charlotte 906, and Sarah 907. He died August, 1856, after establishing the business of block and pump making and the repairing and adjusting of ship ______ under the firm name of Hingston and Son.

805 Arthur Hingston

Son of Richard 785 and Sarah 2493. Born 30 January 1772, I believe at Mageressay. Was married to Miss Hewlett 2264 and had three children - Henry 882, Arthur 883, and John 884. He was drowned at sea, 1824, in the discharge of his duties as an excise man.

806 Philip Hingston

Of Mageressay, seventh son of Richard 785 and Sarah 2493. Born 16 April 1770. Was married to Dorothy Gillard 2108, of Earlington (sic - East Allington?). She died in 1840, having borne him John 812, Mary 813, Sarah 814, Eliza 815, Jane 816, Betsey 817, and William Gillard 818. Mr. Hingston was a woolcomber by trade.

Father told me, in 1883, that the five sons in his family were all older than the daughters and that he was the youngest of the sons; and my recollection is, he or his sister Eliza, with whom I corresponded for some time after his death, told me she was the youngest of the daughters. 808 James Mould Hingston

Eldest child of Edward 804 and Charlotte 2107. Born 1805. Married Eliza _______ 2592, and settled in Plymouth, succeeding his father in the business of block making and repairing of nautical instruments. Mr. Hingston had six children - Thomas 819, Edward 908, James 909, William 910, Eliza 911, and Charlotte 912. He died at Plymouth 11 February 1882.

809 Edward Hingston

Son of Philip 806 and Dorothy 2108. Born at Mageressay in 1800. Went to London and learned the tailoring trade, there married Miss Mary Bowden 2156, of Manchester, about the year 1835, and while his first four children were quite young he moved to New York (city) U.S.A., and there opened a shop in Maiden Lane, between Nassau and William Sts. It was he who first got up the dress of the Hussars in the American Army, with assistance of General McCear, and Capt. Charles. In September, 1843, Messrs. Edward 520, William 525, John 526, and Samuel 527 called upon them, having just arrived on their way to Boston from Liverpool. It is a notable fact that the Williams and Edwards of the Hingstons are confined almost entirely to the two branches which I have designated the Brent branch and the Whitehall branch. Both descended direct from the Wonwell and Holbeton family, and separated about the year 1700 or 1730. These two branches lost sight of each other, and were not heard of until about 1870. Mr. William Hingston 823, who was travelling for a large nursery firm, on passing through Buffalo saw the sign and wrote to the firm of Hingston Brothers, boat builders. The correspondence was taken up a few years later by the writer and has been kept up ever since.

Mr Edward Hingston left the east and tried his fortune at Stockport, California, where, like many others, he dropped what he had and returned to New York, with a still larger family. The following are the names of his children, but not in the order of their birth - Edward 855, Richard 856, William 857, Mary 858, Sarah 859, Eliza 860, Charlotte 861, and Alice 862. Mr. Hingston died 29 June 1849.

Son of Philip 806 and Dorothy 2108. Born 1790. Learned boot and shoe making and moved to Bolonge (sic - Boulogne?), France, where he was in business for many years. He had one son, Richard, born in London. At present I know nothing further of him.

Daughter of Philip 806 and Dorothy 2108. married 1839, to John Holasworth (sic) of Leeds. She died in May 1853.

Married to John Nicholas of Town Rothey (sic), and had issue:- Emma 3132, Mary Hingston 3133, Bessie F. 3136, Elisa 3336, Alma 3334, and Lavinia F. 3136. Mrs Eliza Hingston Nicholas I believe is alive, and living with her daughter, Mrs Alma Nicholas Horsewell, near Newton Abbott, Devon.

816 Jane Hingston

Daughter of Philip 806 and Dorothy 2108. Married to Mr. Willing 2111, a miller of Chittesford (sic). She died in 1842.

817 Betsey Hingston

Daughter of Philip 806 and Dorothy 2108. Born in 1821, and died May 1864.

818 William Gillard Hingston

Youngest son of Philip 806 and Dorothy 2108. Born at East Alvington (Earlington), the home of his mother, 12 August 1807. Left home when quite young man and came to Canada, where he met and married, about 1835 (19 July 1836 has been added later) at Victoria Square, York County, Ontario, Miss Elizabeth Trudgeon 2112, who was born at or near Penzance, or Land's End, Cornwall, England, in 1819. Mr. Hingston afterwards took up a far (farm?) near Ainleyville, Dingle Post Office, Huron County, Ontario. The name of village and post office were afterwards changed to Brussels. Mr. Hingston had 17 children, 13 boys and 4 girls (a hand written note changes this to 14 boys and 3 girls) - Philip Henry 820, Richard Trudgeon 821, Rebecca 822, William 823, Mary 824, Thomas Lome 825, John 826, Edward Alfred 827, Arthur Augustus 828, George 829, Charles 830, Lavinia Jane 831, James 832, Edmund 833, Albert 834, Earnest 835, and one who died in infancy somewhere between William 823 and Arthur A. 828.

Mr. Hingston was well known and highly respected as one of the pioneer farmers of that section. He died 25 March 1884, surrounded by his wife and six of his then eight living children.

They had nine children - John Addison 836, William George 837, Emily Elizabeth 838, Alice Rebecca 839, Ida 840, Carrie Alberta 841, Louisa 842, Charles Richard 865, and Albert Edward 920. (Died May 2, 1914, Brussels J.S. has been added later).

822 Rebecca Hingston

Eldest daughter of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square 5 January 1840. Married 15 February 1865, to John Cardiff, of Brussels, formerly of Smith's Falls, Ontario. She died 25 July 1874, having had five children - Elizabeth Margaret 3104, Alice Rebecca 3105, Richard Earnest 3106, Nelson Homer 3107, and William 3108.

823 William Hingston

Third son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square 10 October 1841. Married 29 July 1871, Ellen Templeton, of Joliet, Illinois. Mr. Hingston was for many years connected to the nursery business, but in 1882 removed to Kansas, near Larned (?), and then engaged in farming. His wife died in 188_. He afterwards moved to ________ Missouri, where he married Mrs _______, and there he died, 16 October 1891, leaving no issue.

824 Mary Elizabeth Hingston

Second daughter of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 1 March 1843, and died 21 July 1844.

825 Thomas Lome Hingston

Fourth son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 28 February 1845. Married 5 February 1873 to Sarah Cardiff 2116, of Brussels, formerly of Smith's Falls, Ontario, sister to John Cardiff, who married Mr. Hingston's sister Rebecca. They have five children - Philip 843, Richard Henry 844, Mark Edmund 845, Ethel Elizabeth 846, and Margaret Lavinia 867.

826 John Hingston

Fifth son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 17 May 1847, and died in San Francisco, California, 1869, December 1869, unmarried. He went to Mitchell, Ontario, and worked at cabinet making, and to London, Ontario, in 1864. Was a member of the London Voluntary Infantry four years.

827 Edward Alfred Hingston

Son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 14 October 1849, died -----.

828 Arthur Augustus Hingston

Son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 20 April 1851. Married Miss Sarah Laidlaw 2117, of Brussels. Their children are - Sarah Beatrice, born at Brussels, November 22, 1883, died December 23, 1883; Albert Laidlaw, born at Brussels, January 27, 1885; Robert William, born at Brussels, April 25, 1887; George, born at Abeline, Kansas, U.S.A., June 7, 1891; and Harold Arthur, born at Abeline, Kansas, January 27, 1894.

Mr. Hingston was for many years agent for farming implements at Brussels, but in 1889 moved to Abeline, Kansas, and engaged in the same business; afterwards moving to a fruit farm at Footholls, near Spokane, Washington.

829 George Hingston

Son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 8 October 1852. Went to Joliet, Illinois, in 18__; married Miss Anna Hicks 2118, of that place, formerly of St. Hillards, Isle of Jersey, 31 August 1881. Mr. Hingston was for 20 years court reporter at Joliet, and in 1900 moved to Meade, Washington, where he engaged in fruit farming. He has three children:- Emory 849, Edna Richard 850, and Ethel 851. (died 22 May 1936 has been added later).

Farmer, son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 6 April 1854. Married 17 February 1886, to Miss Elizabeth Frisby 2119, of Victoria Square. Their children are - William 852, Victor 854, Murial, 913, and Gladys 922. Mr. Hingston is now (1903) farming near Victoria Square. (1907, living at Toronto, Ontario).

831 Lavinia Jane Hingston

Daughter (youngest) of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 19 September 1855. 1903, a stenographer at Chicago, Illinois, and 1907, at Seattle, Washington. (died May 6, 1946 in Brussels, Ontario has been added later). (It is believed that Lavinia Hingston typed the version of these notes from which this transcript was taken, in 1907).

M.D., son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Victoria Square, 27 October 1857. Taught school near Brussels for two years; studied medicine at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1880-1881; graduated from Hahnemann Medical College, Chicago, 1882; practices at Peru, Illinois, until August of that year, then removed to North Platts, Nebraska; afterwards, in 1893, to Cheyenne, Wyoming; coming to Chicago in 1899; was Professor of Gynaecology in Dunham Medical College for two years; Professor of Materia Medica in Hahnemann College and Hospital 1903-1906; Professor of Surgery in Hering Medical College and Hospital, Chicago, 1906 ---. Married to Mrs. Jennie Weaver 2120, of North Platts, 1884 or 5. Their only child, Romaine James 853, was born at North Platts, 17 March 1886, and died at Goldfield, Nevada, 25 July 1905. Dr. Hingston married Miss Mae F. Engle of Chicago, 1 May 1884(?), and have children - Addison Wilbur Villele, born 14 May, 1??5, and a son, born 17 May, 1906. Son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Brussels, 31 December 1862. Learned the trade of machinist at Brussels; afterwards moved to Joliet and worked in the Illinois Steel Works there; returned to Brussels, and afterwards went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he died of Typhoid fever, 16 February 1884, unmarried.

835 Earnest Hingston

Youngest son of William Gillard 818 and Elizabeth 2112. Born at Brussels, September 1864, and died September 1866.

Son of Richard Trudgeon 821 and Harriet 2113. Born at Brussels, 2 December 1867. Is now (1907) living at Winnipeg, Ontario. Married Miss Annie Lloyd, Seaforth, Ontario, 15 November 1893. Three children - Lloyd Addison, born at Seaforth 7 January 1895; Cora Toledo, born at Seaforth, 7 November 1896; Carrie Alberta, born at Wingham, 9 September 1901.

837 William George Hingston

Second son of Richard Trudgeon 821 and Harriet 2113. Born at Brussels 4 November 1869. Learned the trade of tinsmith there; went to Holland, Manitoba, about 1890, to Dawson, Alaska, in 1898, returned to Holland in 1902, going to British Columbia, and from there to Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1905 or 1906.

Eldest daughter of Richard Trudgeon 821 and Harriet 2113. Born at Brussels, 1 January 1872. Married Henry Johnston Parr, of Bradwardine, Manitoba, Jan. 4, 1899, and (1907) has children - John Richard, born 23 November 1899, Harriet, and daughter born latter part of 1906.

Born in Wawanosh Township, Huron County, Ontario, April 25, 1874, Married Miss Agnes Curtin of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, November 1904, whose birthplace was Washington Mills, New York. Had two children, Albert Cardiff Hingston - lives in Forest Grove, Oregon, and Philip Curtin Hingston, lives in Seaside, Oregon. (This entry is not in the main sequence and the children have been added in later by hand, by the grandchild of Albert).

Fourth and youngest son of Richard Trudgeon 821 and Harriet 2113. Born at Belgrave, Ontario, 30 January 1890. (1906-07, is studying pharmacy near Bradwardine, Manitoba.) (Note - appears in sequence as 844, but in father's entry is given as 920 - 844 appears in children of 825 Thomas Lome Hingston)
