Hingston Tree HI
Descendants of John Hingston, married 1739 in Dartmouth
This tree has been produced by me almost entirely from the IGI lists
and the census information, in an attempt to draw together some of the
Hingston families in the Dartmouth area where the name Langworthy is a
common thread. It must thus ALL be regarded as highly suspect until the
original sources have been checked. It may though form the basis of future
research.

Generation No. 1
1. JOHN HINGSTONE. He married ELEANOR LANGWORTHY
31 Jan 1739/40 in St Saviour, Dartmouth.
There was another family, John Hingston and Elizabeth Trust (married
17/7/1733) in Dartmouth, possibly having children at the same time. Only
those children that can definitely be linked to John and Eleanor are noted
here. It is possible that the two Johns are the same, and that Elizabeth
died, in which case this list will need to be reviewed.
Children of John Hingstone and Eleanor Langworthy are:

-
ELEANOR HINGSTON, b. Dec 1795, Dartmouth; m. THOMAS PRATT, 15 Nov 1819,
St Saviour, Dartmouth. It is believed Thomas' father was also called
Thomas and kept The Old London Inn in St Sidwell St, Exeter and that Thomas
went into the theatrical business, changing his name to Mowbray.
Thomas and Elizabeth had three children, Elizabeth b 1820, Thomas b 1822
and Richard Langworthy Hingston Pratt b 1824. This younger Thomas
called himself Thomas Mowbray and was proprietor of the Soho Theatre in
Dean St, London. In 1861 his mother, Hellen Moubray (sic), aged 63,
born Devon, is living with him. It is believed that this was Eleanor
Hingston. The Soho area was a little more respectable than today
to begin with but probably slipped downhill as more theatres and music
halls competed with each other. Our Mr Mowbray appeared to do a mixture
of plays and musical shows. He was listed as a comedian in 1861. He also
opened the Royal Aquarium in London. This was aimed at entertaining Members
of Parliament after their late night sessions. The idea was to house an
Aquarium for families (harkening back to his Devon roots maybe) and to
have a theatre at the back for evening entertainment. However, the tanks
were never filled with fish and so the venture failed, although the theatre
lived on. He was also lessee of the New Royalty Theatre. The catalogue
at the British Library shows a playbill
for the Soho Theatre in 1854 with Mr Mowbray as lessee. It is
possible that Helen/Eleanor Hingston, his mother, also went on stage. Pam
Dean <harridene@ntlworld.com> is interested in this family and would
like to make contact with others who are following this line.

5. GEORGE HINGSTON was born Jun 1794 in
Dartmouth, the son of 3. Richard Langworthy Hingston and
Elizabeth (Beenlen). He married MARY BULLEY 1 Jan 1820 in St Clement,
Dartmouth. There is no obvious sign of this family in the 1851 census in

6. RICHARD LANGWORTHY HINGSTON was born
Apr 1816 in Dartmouth, the son of 4. Richard Langworthy

in Cornworthy, daughter of John Holditch (1769-1836) and Elizabeth (nee
Giddey) (1773-1858), of Court Prior, Cornworthy. In the 1851
census the family are shown as living at King St, Brixham. Richard
is described as a Lloyd's Agent, born at Dartmouth. By 1881 Jane has been
widowed and staying with her brother-in-law, John Puddicombe, a surgeon,
in Dartmouth; he was the husband of Richard's sister Helen Susan.
Most of the information for this family comes from Rosemary Neale <RosemaryNeale@breathemail.net>
who is researching the Holditch line.
